The competition entry for the former central freeway site proposed a pedestrian promenade and a network of walking alleys that provide access to courtyards defined by three-story walk-up cottages. Higher buildings comprised of flats above retail flank the boulevard.
Build Inc and 5 architects* collaborated to design and bid on parcel P. Employing some positive attributes of Hayes Valley – a fine grained scale and mix of housing types and a hierarchy of streets interlaced by alleys – the parcel is subdivided and designed as individual buildings organized along a landscaped mews. Hickory alley would be re built as a “living street”.
